Traditional Braces

Consider Traditional Braces

Those looking at orthodontics for their children or themselves should take a serious look at traditional braces. Traditional braces are typically the metal versions but there are many variations to choose from that are effective and affordable.

Traditional braces are typically the most affordable type of orthodontics and have a track record for effectiveness. The downside is that the metal types are more visible than other options and can be uncomfortable with rubber bands and wires.

Metal Braces

Everyone has seen the traditional metal braces at some point in their lifetime. Either they or a friend wore them. Metal braces consist of brackets that fit on teeth, arch wires that connect brackets, and elastic bands that help shift teeth.

While every orthodontic patient is different, the average length of time to wear metal braces is around 18 months. Going this route requires regular orthodontic visits every four to six weeks.

The biggest complaint about metal braces is the elastic bands. They can break and get in the way of eating and speaking. The option for that is self-ligating braces. This option is braces without elastic bands.

Self-ligating braces use a unique bracket that clips onto the archwire. That eliminates the need for elastic bands. These types of braces make braces easier to clean, more comfortable, and less noticeable.

Another complaint about the elastic bands is they aren’t attractive. This problem can be resolved with children and teens by making them fun. Orthodontists offer colorful elastic bands that patients can switch out to match their moods or outfits. This helps children approach orthodontic treatments with more confidence.

Clear Braces

While younger orthodontic patients usually accept traditional metal braces easily, older children and adults may want something more subtle. Clear braces provide them with a solid option that is effective and attractive.
Clear braces, sometimes called ceramic braces, consist of ceramic brackets that match the color of your teeth. The archwires are frosted so they are less noticeable.

Clear braces work the same way that traditional metal braces do. They correct the same problems including misaligned teeth, overbite, and underbite. The one disadvantage of clear braces is they aren’t as sturdy as traditional metal braces so there could be more broken wires or other issues. This also means it may take longer to complete orthodontic treatments using clear braces. Orthodontic visits will still be every four to six weeks.

Lingual braces are for those who want the effectiveness of traditional metal braces but don't want them to show. They aren't advised for younger patients but adults find that lingual braces meet their needs.

Lingual braces are metal braces that are installed behind the teeth instead of on the front side. They are hidden from public view while providing all the effectiveness of orthodontic treatments.

This option isn't for everyone. Lingual braces can be uncomfortable against the tongue and takes time to become accustomed to them. They can also inhibit speech. At Setai Dental, we provide this option along with others to give our patients a full range of orthodontic care.

The Cost of Dental Braces

Dental braces can cost anywhere from $3,000 to over $10,000 in Canada, depending on the type selected and the patient's needs.

Generally, traditional metal braces are going to be the least expensive with the cost ranging from $3,000 to $7,000. Clear braces have a similar cost falling between $2,800 and $6,800. Lingual braces are going to be the most expensive with an estimated cost ranging from $3,000 to $10,000.

A Setai Dental orthodontist can give you a more exact cost after performing an exam and X-rays. We also have office staff that help you budget out costs and find an affordable solution that meets both your orthodontic and financing needs.
