Installing a filling is a routine dental procedure used to treat cavities. While the procedure is generally quick and minimally invasive, the time required can vary depending on the complexity of the case.
The process begins with the dentist numbing the area around the affected tooth using a local anesthetic. A topical gel may be applied first to help minimize discomfort from the injection.
Once the area is numb, the dentist will carefully remove the decayed tissue from the tooth. The dentist will explain each step of the procedure and may provide information on sounds or sensations you may experience.
After cleaning the cavity, the dentist will place a filling material, typically a composite material made from resin and ceramic, into the cavity.
If a composite resin is used, a dental curing light will be used to harden the material. If another type of filling, such as a gold filling, is used, curing may not be necessary.
The final step involves polishing and smoothing the treated tooth to ensure the filling fits properly and is comfortable.
Whether you have a lost filling or have developed a new cavity, it’s important to address the issue promptly.
A cavity can worsen if left untreated. Our dentists can assess the situation and recommend an appropriate treatment.
