An untreated tooth infection can cause pain, swelling, and other complications. In some cases, it may contribute to further oral health issues or affect overall well-being. A root canal is one option to address the infection by removing damaged tissue and protecting the tooth. The procedure is typically followed by placing a crown to restore the tooth’s function and structure.
Initial Assessment and Treatment Planning:
At Setai Dental, our priority is maintaining your oral health. Before performing a root canal, we assess and address any underlying issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease, to ensure a healthy foundation.
Identifying the Need for a Root Canal:
A root canal is often recommended when a patient experiences symptoms like tooth pain or swelling in the jaw. During the first appointment, the dentist examines the affected tooth to determine if the pain is due to an infection. Antibiotics may be prescribed to manage the infection, and a follow-up appointment is scheduled for the procedure.
Preparing for the Procedure:
At the next appointment, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth to create a customized crown, if needed. Local anesthetic is used to numb the area, ensuring comfort during the procedure.
Performing the Root Canal:
The dentist removes decay from the tooth and accesses the infected pulp. The infected tissue is carefully removed using specialized tools, and the area is cleaned and filled with a material designed to prevent further infection. The tooth is then sealed.
Final Restoration:
In some cases, a crown is typically placed to restore the tooth. In some instances, we can create and install the crown on the same day, while in other cases, we may provide a temporary crown while the permanent one is being prepared at a lab. Once the permanent crown is ready, a final appointment is scheduled to complete the restoration.
